Florence and Pisa from Livorno: What Actually Fits in a Port Day

Livorno is sold as Florence. That is the honest reason ships call here, and it is also why so many passengers spend their Tuscan day on transport. Between your cabin and the Duomo there are two shuttles, a 2.5 km gap to the station and a train — and every one of those legs has a number attached. Here they all are, so you can decide what fits before you are standing on a quay with a queue behind you.

Getting Out of the Port Is Two Separate Shuttles

This is the part that surprises people, and it costs the first hour of the day if you have not planned for it.

Livorno is a big working industrial port and the cruise berths sit inside it. Large ships use the Alto Fondale terminal at quays 46/47; the Port Authority also lists a second cruise terminal at Porto Mediceo, closer to the old town.

1. The port shuttle is free and mandatory. You cannot walk out of the secure area. A pass is issued at the gangway and the shuttle takes you from the ship's side to the port exit.
2. The city shuttle is separate and usually paid. It runs from the port exit to Via Cogorano, beside Piazza del Municipio. It is arranged between the port authority and each cruise line, so there is no public tariff. One local operator, Shore Emotion, publishes roughly EUR 7 to 10 per person paid on the spot; some lines include it. Confirm the fare on board.

Write down one address: Via Cogorano, corner of Piazza del Municipio. It is where the city shuttle terminates and where almost every organised tour meets. The IAT tourist office is in the same square at Piazza Municipio 8/10 (daily 09:00–15:00 in winter, 09:00–17:00 in summer), and a municipal pharmacy 60 m away on Piazza Grande is open 24 hours a day, all year.

From the Shuttle Stop to the Trains

Livorno Centrale is 2.5 km from the shuttle stop — about 34 minutes on foot, which nobody should spend.

• Bus: Autolinee Toscane lines 1+ and 2+ both connect Piazza Grande with Stazione Centrale. A single urban ticket is EUR 2.00 and lasts 70 minutes.
• Taxi: the municipal tariff sets fixed fares — EUR 22 for up to four people or EUR 28 for five to eight between Livorno Centrale and the cruise terminal, and EUR 18/24 between the terminal and the city centre. Fixed means you can hand over notes without a negotiation.

The Train Numbers, and What They Mean for Your Day

From Trenitalia's Tuscany regional tariff valid from 1 August 2026:

• Pisa Centrale: 13 to 16 minutes, roughly 59 trains a day, EUR 3.00 second class.
• Florence Santa Maria Novella: direct, fastest 1h27, typically about 1h44, roughly 34 trains a day, EUR 11.40 second class.

Now the arithmetic that decides your day. Add the two shuttles, the bus to the station, the wait, the train, and the walk from Santa Maria Novella into the centre, and Florence is about two and a quarter hours away door to door. On a 9 to 11 hour call that leaves roughly five hours in Florence — one museum, one cathedral, one lunch, one gelato, and a disciplined walk back.

Pisa is the opposite case. Fifteen minutes by train, a EUR 3.00 ticket and a 20-minute walk from Pisa Centrale to the Campo dei Miracoli make it the easiest big-name sight in the western Mediterranean. If your call is short, or you are travelling with someone who cannot manage a five-hour Florence, Pisa alone is a genuinely good day rather than a consolation prize.

Both in one day, independently, is where people come unstuck. It means Livorno to Florence, Florence back to Pisa, Pisa to Livorno, three station changes and no slack. The ship does not wait for you.

When the Escorted Version Is the Better Buy

This is the port where a coach earns its money, because it collapses two shuttles, a bus and a train into a single door-to-door leg — and because the operator, not you, is watching the clock.

• Pisa and Manarola in Cinque Terre — nine hours, from EUR 64.80. Cinque Terre independently from Livorno is a three-change rail day; this is the sane way to see one village of it.
• Portovenere and Cinque Terre by private boat — nine hours, from EUR 940 for the private party, rated 4.9. Priced as a private charter, not per person; it is here for completeness, not because most people should book it.

Compare any of those against your ship's excursion desk before you decide. The independent versions are typically a fraction of the equivalent ship tour, and the trade-off is the same one it always is: the ship waits for its own buses and for nobody else's. On a tight call, that guarantee is what the premium buys.

The Argument for Staying in Livorno

If you have already done Florence, or your call is short, Livorno is not a sacrifice.

La Venezia is a canal quarter built by Venetian engineers in the 1600s, walkable in an hour from Piazza del Municipio. The covered market is one of the finest in Tuscany and trades Monday to Saturday, 07:00–15:00, closed Sunday — the city confirms those hours. Both the Museo della Città and the Museo Fattori run Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–19:00, which means museums here shut on Mondays; a Monday call is a market-and-canals day whether you planned it or not.

Eat what the town actually eats: cacciucco, the five-fish stew; ponce, the local rum-and-coffee ritual; and a cinque e cinque, the chickpea-cake sandwich sold at counters like Antica Torteria da Gagarin — cash only. Cards are otherwise normal in restaurants, museums and the aquarium, with ATMs along Via Grande and around Piazza Grande a minute from the shuttle stop.
