Gladmat Festival Stavanger: What Cruise Passengers Need to Know (2026)

Gladmat is Scandinavia

Most cruise passengers arriving in Stavanger follow a familiar route: Gamle Stavanger for the white wooden houses, Øvre Holmegate for coffee, maybe the fish market by the water. It is a good day. But if your ship arrives between June 24 and 27, you are walking into something entirely different.

Gladmat — "happy food" in Norwegian — is Scandinavia's largest food festival. In 2026 it runs for the 28th consecutive year, drawing up to 250,000 visitors over four days. The festival arena stretches the entire length of Vågen, Stavanger's inner harbour. The same waterfront where cruise ships dock. You do not need to find the festival. The festival finds you.

What Gladmat Actually Is

Gladmat is not a food fair in the conventional sense — rows of stalls selling the same fudge and tourist tat. It is a serious culinary festival: Stavanger's best restaurants present special festival dishes, regional producers from across western Norway bring their products, and a dedicated kitchen stage runs live cooking demonstrations and chef competitions throughout the day.

The food pricing model is designed to encourage tasting rather than committing to a full meal: almost every exhibitor sells a single festival dish for NOK 50–75. You graze. You try the smoked lamb from one stall, the langoustine bisque from the next, the sheep's milk cheese from a Rogaland farmhouse producer around the corner. Entry to the festival arena is free of charge.

The Cruise Ship Advantage

Locals who visit Gladmat plan their day around it. Cruise passengers who dock during the festival get it as an accidental gift — and it is one of the best port day scenarios on the Norwegian circuit.

Ships that dock in Vågen are positioned directly inside the festival perimeter. Walk off the ship, turn left or right along the waterfront, and you are in the middle of it. No transport, no planning, no entry fee. Ships using Risavika terminal (the industrial port south of the city) will need a taxi or shuttle into the centre — approximately 15–20 minutes — but the journey is worth it on these dates.

What to Do at Gladmat

Walk the harbour and graze

The simplest and best use of time: walk the full length of Vågen from one end to the other, stopping at whatever looks interesting. Allow 2–3 hours to do this properly — there is more to see than it looks on a map, and you will stop frequently. Budget NOK 300–500 per person for food if you graze seriously.

Kokepunktet — the kitchen stage

Inside the tent at Skur 6 on the waterfront, Kokepunktet ("the boiling point") runs live cooking demonstrations and conversations with chefs throughout the day. This is free, requires no booking, and is worth a 30–45 minute stop even if you do not understand Norwegian. Watching a Michelin-standard chef work is universal.

Local breweries and cider

A dedicated area of the festival showcases Rogaland's local breweries and cider producers. Stavanger's craft beer scene has grown significantly over the past decade, and several producers you cannot find outside the region pour here. This is the practical alternative to hunting down individual brewery taprooms across the city.

Pedersgata and Fargegata

The festival extends beyond the waterfront into Pedersgata (Stavanger's most interesting food street) and Øvre Holmegate (the famous coloured street, known locally as Fargegata). Gladmat Night in Fargegata is an evening event, but the daytime activity in these streets is worth the 10-minute walk from the harbour.

Kjøkkenfesten — the evening events

Each evening of the festival, Kokepunktet hosts Kjøkkenfesten: a ticketed dinner event with a different chef and theme each night. These are popular with locals and sell out in advance. For cruise passengers, the timing usually conflicts with all-aboard — but if your ship is in Stavanger overnight, it is worth planning around.

Honest Notes for Cruise Passengers

It is busy. 250,000 people over four days is not a small crowd, and the busiest period is Saturday afternoon. Arrive early — as soon as your ship clears customs — to get the waterfront before the peak. By mid-morning it is already lively. By 2pm on a weekend, it is very full.

You will not be hungry for the ship's buffet. Between the smoked fish, the regional cheeses, the langoustines, the craft beer, and the festival desserts, most people leave Gladmat having eaten significantly more than intended. Budget accordingly and accept this.

Combine it with Gamle Stavanger. The old town is a 10-minute walk from Vågen and completely separate from the festival crowds. The logical route: Gladmat in the morning, Gamle Stavanger when you need a break from the noise, then back to the festival for a final lap before the ship.

Gladmat and Preikestolen are not compatible. If you are considering the Pulpit Rock hike on the same day as Gladmat, abandon that plan. Preikestolen is a full-day commitment. Gladmat is also a full day if done properly. Choose.
