Maho Beach from the St. Maarten Cruise Pier: Four Ways to Get There

Maho Beach is the single thing most people want out of a St. Maarten call: the beach at the end of Princess Juliana International Airport's runway, where aircraft on final approach cross the sand very low. The question nobody answers properly is the only one that matters when you are standing on the quay at Point Blanche with nine hours in hand — how do you get there, and which way is right for you?

There are four ways. They cost very different amounts and hand you very different amounts of time on the sand. Three are bookings we earn a commission on; one is not, and it is the cheapest way for a couple, so it goes first.

Why the Beach Is Like This at All

Princess Juliana's runway ends at the sand. There is a road, a fence, then the beach, and aircraft on final approach pass over all three at low altitude before touching down. That geometry is the whole attraction, and Maho is one of the 18 places pinned in the St. Maarten port guide because of it.

What we will not give you is a runway length, a clearance height, an aircraft type or a schedule. Those numbers are all over the internet and we could not verify one of them, so they are not here.

One thing to square before comparing: the taxi tariff is set in US dollars, the tours are listed in euros, and every price you meet ashore on the Dutch side is quoted in USD.

1. Taxi, Under Your Own Steam

This is the cheapest option for two people and the only one that gives you unlimited time on the sand.

Fares are fixed by government zone and there are no meters. The Maho zone is USD 25, and that covers one OR two passengers together — not per person. From three to five passengers it switches to a per-person rate of USD 9 each, so a family of four pays USD 36, not USD 25. Add 25 % between 22:00 and 06:00 and on public holidays. The rank at Harbour Point Village holds over 100 cabs by the port's own count, so supply is not the problem; knowing the tariff before you open the door is.

There is no bus fare to Maho here because there is none we could verify. The only crossing fare our research confirmed is the Line 1 minibus from Philipsburg to Marigot at US$2.00, and that is a different road.

2. From the Water, on the Catamaran Day Sail

The luxury catamaran day sail is five hours from EUR 120 on a 62-foot catamaran run by Sail The Phoenix, and it is the one option that changes what you see.

It leaves Bobby's Marina at 10:00 and is back around 15:00. It stops in a sheltered bay first — snorkel gear, paddleboards and a floating mat come out — serves fresh fruit and cake under sail, and then runs to Maho so you watch the approach traffic drop over the sand from the water rather than from the crowd standing on it. Lunch is made fresh on board afterwards, with unlimited drinks.

That is the honest selling point and also the honest limitation: you get the approach from offshore, not a foot of beach time. If you want the photograph from the sand with the fence in it, this is the wrong booking.

The logistics trap is the meeting point. It is Bobby's Marina, not the cruise pier. The walk into town is 1.6 km — the port and the tourist bureau both say 15 minutes, two independent pedestrian routers say 20 to 22, and we would use the longer figure. Leave the ship by about 09:15, or take a taxi.

3. Maho as a Stop on the Island Tour

The island and beach tour across the Dutch and French sides is five hours from EUR 60, and Maho is one stop on it alongside Orient Bay, Marigot with its waterfront market, and Bell's Lookout Point over Simpson Bay Lagoon. Right if you want the island and will accept that someone else decides your Maho window. Wrong if Maho is the entire point of your day, because a fixed slot can easily fall in a quiet spell.

One caveat before you commit: pickup is included, but the exact cruise-terminal pickup arrangement only appears once you check availability on the listing. Read it there and check it against your all-aboard time.

4. Maho as One of Three Beaches

The beaches tour with transfer is also five hours from EUR 60, with free time on Mullet Bay, Orient Beach on the French side, and Maho. Between them the driver-guide stops at Bell's panoramic viewpoint and leaves time in Marigot's shops. Live English-speaking guide, English audio guide, transfer and pickup included.

This suits a passenger who wants beach time and does not want to negotiate anything on the quay. Two verified reviewers, from November and December 2025, report having the vehicle to themselves — pleasant on a quiet call, but not something to count on. As with the island tour, pickup details appear only at the availability step.

There Is No Arrivals Timetable You Can Trust

Arrival times at Princess Juliana shift daily. Any blog printing a fixed list of times is telling you what happened on one particular day, and we are not adding to the pile.

The reliable method is a live flight tracker, checked on the morning of your call, filtered to inbound arrivals. Do that on the ship: St. Maarten publishes no advertised free visitor WiFi — neither the port nor the tourist bureau lists a network — so plan on your onboard package, not a hotspot at the beach.

The second signal is free and already on the sand: the crowd is the timetable. When people mass along the fence line and phones come up, something is on approach. When the beach thins out, you have time for a drink.

Jet Blast Is the Real Hazard

The arriving aircraft everyone photographs is not the dangerous part of this beach. Departures are.

Departing aircraft line up on the runway with the airport fence at their back and run the engines up before rolling. Standing behind that fence to take the blast is the thing tourists come here to do, and people have been hurt doing it. The mechanism is simple: sand and loose objects are thrown at speed, and there is nothing behind the fence to hold on to if you lose your footing.

We are not going to dress that up with an incident or a statistic we cannot verify. Treat the posted warnings as instructions, stay well clear of the fence during departures, and keep children and anyone unsteady on their feet away from it entirely.

Mullet Bay, and Getting Home

Mullet Bay is walking distance from Maho and it is the quiet alternative — the beaches tour treats the two as separate stops for a reason. If the sky is empty, or the fence line is three deep, walk over and come back later.

The fare home is the same whichever of the two you leave from — USD 25 for one or two, USD 9 each for three to five. Carry small US notes: cards work in the bigger places on the Dutch side, but the tourist bureau warns that small family-run places are cash only, and a beach bar is exactly that.

Timing It Against Your Ship

A typical St. Maarten call is 9 to 11 hours, which is generous, and it is not a tender port — pedestrians walk straight off. That length is what makes the independent version work.

The trade-off is simple. A taxi buys control: you go when you want, stay as long as the traffic justifies, and leave when it does not. A tour buys certainty: the transfer is handled and the guide is included, but a five-hour tour with a fixed Maho slot decides your window for you, and if that slot is quiet, that was your Maho. The catamaran sidesteps the question by going out to where the aircraft come in rather than waiting on the sand for them.

Whichever you pick, the usual rule holds: no independent operator waits for a ship. Fix your own turnaround time and obey it.
