Cozumel is not a single-pier port. The Quintana Roo port authority (APIQROO) berths cruise ships at three separate terminals and publishes the assignment ship by ship. Punta Langosta is in the centre of San Miguel, on Avenida Rafael E. Melgar. Terminal SSA México (widely called the International Pier) and Terminal Puerta Maya are next to each other about 5 km south of the centre. Across January and February 2026 the port authority logged 301 cruise calls and 993,975 passengers: Puerta Maya took 40.0% of them, SSA México 32.8% and Punta Langosta 27.2% — so roughly seven passengers in ten land south of town and need transport in. Carnival-brand ships were the only ones with a fully predictable berth in that sample (70 of 70 calls at Puerta Maya, along with all Holland America and Cunard calls); Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Celebrity, MSC and Disney were spread across all three piers, so your line does not tell you your pier.

Before you plan anything, find out which pier you are on — it changes your whole day. Punta Langosta puts you in the middle of San Miguel: through the gate onto Avenida Rafael E. Melgar and the main square is 950 m, about 13 minutes on the flat. Puerta Maya and Terminal SSA México sit 4.7–5.2 km south of town, and from there you take a taxi (about 5 km, 12 minutes by road) — do not try to walk it.

Mexican peso (MXN). Banco de México's FIX rate was 16.9202 MXN/USD on 8 September 2026 (16.9237 for payments today). USD is accepted widely in the cruise zone but at each seller's own rate — Winjet's ferry counter posts 16.30 — so paying in pesos is simply cheaper. OpenStreetMap has 7 ATMs and 5 bank branches within 900 m of the Punta Langosta gate (HSBC, BBVA, Banorte, Scotiabank, Banregio; Banamex, CIBanco and two Euronet machines). Decline any card terminal that offers to charge you in dollars. The same logic applies to the reef fee: Article 198 of the Ley Federal de Derechos sets a charge for Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel per person, per day, in pesos, and it falls on everyone aboard the boat, not just the divers — so the USD 12 to 14 different operators quote are their own conversions of one peso figure, each rounded their way. Under-12s, pensioners and visitors with a disability are exempt by statute, with documents.
Three cruise terminals, and only Carnival-brand ships reliably use the same one. Punta Langosta is downtown; Terminal SSA México and Terminal Puerta Maya are 4–5 km south. The port authority publishes the assignment at servicios.apiqroo.com.mx/programacion — check your ship the night before rather than trusting a berth you read online. There is no gate fee and no registration to go ashore.
From the southern piers, a taxi is the only sensible way in: about 5 km, 12 minutes by road to the main square. Cozumel's taxis are run by the Sindicato de Taxistas Lic. Adolfo López Mateos (987 872 0041), and neither the union's own site nor the Quintana Roo transport authority publishes a current fare table we could open — so we quote no price. Agree the fare in pesos before you get in, and ask explicitly whether it is for the car or per person. Walking is not an option: neither Avenida Rafael E. Melgar nor the Carretera Perimetral carries any mapped pavement on that stretch, and both routing engines send pedestrians along the carriageway of a main road for a full hour.
Playa del Carmen is a real day trip and a real risk. The ferry terminal (Terminal Marítima San Miguel, at the Muelle Fiscal) is 1.1 km — about 15 minutes — north along the waterfront from the Punta Langosta gate. On 9 September 2026 Ultramar ran 15 departures each way; from Cozumel at 06:00, 07:30, 08:00, 08:30, 09:30, 10:00, 11:30, 12:00, then a gap to 14:00 and 16:00. Crossing is about 40 minutes and you must be at the terminal 30 minutes before departure. Winjet's published adult fare is 310 MXN one way from Cozumel, 645 MXN return (272/567.46 MXN booked online); Ultramar publishes 380 MXN one way in First Class. Only attempt it if your ship sails at 18:00 or later, go on an early boat, and treat the 15:00 back from Playa del Carmen as your last one.
Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November and peaks on 10 September, with most activity mid-August to mid-October — you are calling inside the busiest fortnight of the year. From September through May the other hazard is a norte, and the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional tracks cold fronts across all of those months, so this one runs straight through Caribbean high season. What matters is that the Capitanía del Puerto closes the port by vessel class, not all at once. A small-craft closure grounds the dive and snorkel boats — that is the class they belong to — while your ship berths normally: during the December 2023 front the port authority logged six cruise calls the same day. A harder blow closes the Playa del Carmen crossing outright, as in April 2019 when Ultramar suspended sailings and left passengers stranded at the Muelle Fiscal. So a norte is a reason to keep the day on the sheltered west side of the island and not to be on the mainland, rather than a reason to expect a cancelled call.
Spanish. The tourist economy here is thoroughly bilingual — the taxi union advertises bilingual drivers and certified guides, and the island's main hospital markets itself to international patients — but that is the cruise zone, not the whole island. Prices, taxi fares and ferry tickets are all quoted in pesos, so learn the numbers if nothing else.
Mexico now charges cruise passengers a federal non-resident duty. Under the presidential decree published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación on 30 June 2025, the net amount is USD 10 per passenger for calls between 1 August 2026 and 30 June 2027 (it was USD 5 until 31 July 2026, and rises to USD 15 in July 2027). You pay it once per cruise, not per Mexican port — re-entry on the same ship on the same itinerary carries a 100% credit — and the decree lets the shipping lines collect it, so it reaches you through your cruise fare rather than at the pier. Nothing is collected from you at the gate.
911 is the single national emergency number in Mexico; the old 060/065/066/080 codes were withdrawn. The island's main private hospital is Costamed Cozumel at Calle 1 Sur 101, between Avenida 50 and 50 Bis — about 2.4 km and 8 minutes by car from the Punta Langosta gate, 15 minutes from Puerta Maya. It has been Joint Commission International accredited since 2019 (renewed 2022) and reachable on 800 900 1133, or 855 301 4111 from the US. Divers: Costamed runs the island's hyperbaric chamber — up to 6 ATA, up to 14 patients at once, a DAN preferred provider, with a free fitness-to-dive phone consult and free ambulance transfer to the hospital.
