Livorno is a big working industrial port and the cruise berths sit inside it, not beside the town. Large ships use the Alto Fondale terminal at quays 46/47, which the operator Porto di Livorno 2000 describes as built for ships over 300 m with an 11,000 m² coach and taxi area behind it; the Port Authority also lists a second cruise terminal at Porto Mediceo, closer to the old town. You cannot simply walk out: passengers are carried from the ship's side to the port exit by a free port shuttle and are issued a pass to leave the secure area. From the port exit a separate city shuttle, arranged between the port and the cruise lines, drops you on Via Cogorano beside Piazza del Municipio.

Almost every organised tour meets on Via Cogorano at the corner of Piazza del Municipio — that is also where the city shuttle terminates, so it is the one address worth writing down. The IAT tourist office is in the same square at Piazza Municipio 8/10 (daily 09:00–15:00 in winter, 09:00–17:00 in summer) and there is a municipal pharmacy 60 m away on Piazza Grande.

Euro (EUR). Cards work almost everywhere except the oldest counter shops — Gagarin's torteria takes cash only. ATMs along Via Grande and Piazza Grande, one minute from the shuttle stop.
Two different shuttles. A free port shuttle carries you from the ship's side to the port exit — you cannot cross the working port on foot, and a pass is issued at the gangway. A separate city shuttle then runs to Via Cogorano beside Piazza del Municipio; it is arranged between the port authority and each cruise line, so the price varies. Shore Emotion, one of the local operators, publishes roughly EUR 7–10 per person paid on the spot; some lines include it. Confirm the fare on board — no operator publishes a fixed tariff.
Livorno Centrale is the whole point of this port. Pisa Centrale is 13–16 minutes away with roughly 59 trains a day; a second-class Regionale single is EUR 3.00. Florence Santa Maria Novella is direct, fastest 1h27 and typically about 1h44, roughly 34 trains a day, EUR 11.40 second class. Fares are from Trenitalia's Tuscany regional tariff valid from 1 August 2026; check the journey planner for your date.
Livorno Centrale is 2.5 km from the shuttle stop — about 34 minutes on foot. Autolinee Toscane lines 1+ and 2+ both connect Piazza Grande with Stazione Centrale; a single urban ticket is EUR 2.00 and lasts 70 minutes. The municipal taxi tariff sets fixed fares of EUR 22 (up to 4 people) or EUR 28 (5–8) between Livorno Centrale and the Cruise Terminal, and EUR 18/24 between the Cruise Terminal and the city centre.
The covered market opens Monday to Saturday 07:00–15:00 and is closed on Sunday — the city confirms those hours. Museums here shut on Mondays: both the Museo della Città and the Museo Fattori run Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–19:00. Several trattorie do lunch only until 15:00, and a few close Sunday or Monday entirely.
Toilets exist inside the cruise terminal itself, and OpenStreetMap maps public toilets near Via Grande and inside the covered market. A municipal pharmacy sits on Piazza Grande one minute from the shuttle stop; the operator confirms it is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Italian, with a strong local dialect you will hear in the market. English is normal in museums, the aquarium and tour-facing places, patchier in the old bars. 'Un ponce' gets you the local drink; 'un cinque e cinque' gets you the local sandwich.
